Yuni shakes me awake. I’m so dead tired that it feels like my body is made of lead and sunken so deep into my floor mattress that it’s about to swallow me up. I wrap my pillow around my face.

Then Yuni flicks on the lights. I hear Helena and Aram groan. I check the clock—it’s four a.m.

There’s no way. We’re not scheduled to be out of bed until five. Doesn’t Yuni understand that an hour of extra sleep means literally everything to us? I’m ready to clobber her in the face.

“Sorry, but this is an emergency,” she says in a hushed tone. “CEO Sonu is on her way right now.”

I shoot up to a sitting position.

“She’s coming here?” Helena asks, blinking.

We jump out of bed. No one will tell us what’s going on as we try to make ourselves somewhat presentable as fast as we can. We’re not due to The Shops for the glam squad to pull our airport looks together until six.

Has the MV been canceled? Has there been a hobbit uprising in New Zealand? Whatever this is, it must be major.

Minutes later, the members gather in the living room with wet hair and scrubbed faces. The ultra-bright lights are on, and the same camerawomen from last night are here, too. We’ve been on camera without makeup before, but never this early and on so little sleep. Aram is the only one who looks presentable—it’s impossible for her to not look good—while WooWee is trying in vain to shield her face with her hand.

When Lena finally arrives, she’s dressed impeccably in a couture houndstooth suit and looks like she’s been up for hours.

We all sit up straighter. The Idol Apartment is so intimate to the six of us and our managers; seeing someone so grown and elegant here makes us unbearably self-conscious.

“I’m sorry to show up here unannounced, ladies,” Lena says with a mournful look on her face. There’s a red rim around her eyes. “I have some awful news. I know you’re wondering where your member BowHee is.”

We look around. I can tell from everyone’s faces that we were all too frantic this morning to notice she wasn’t here.

“Very late last night,” Lena goes on, “BowHee came to my office, saying she had an emergency. She asked me—actually, begged me—to please let her out of her contract.” Lena’s voice breaks, and she dabs her eyes with a silk handkerchief. “She told me she was in misery. She asked me for mercy by letting her go. It became clear to me that for her sake, and for her health, I had no other choice but to grant her wish.”

No.

No, no, no.

This can’t be real. I literally pinch myself. I’m going to wake up and see Helena’s nasty foot in front of my face.

Just a few hours ago, BowHee was happy, jumping up and down with us watching the drones streak across the sky. That smile on the roof told me that she was fully committed again to move forward, insecurities be damned.
